Our Story

Artopia Gallery was established in October 2011 by twin sisters Cally and Bec Bugg. They started operating as "Artopia", a framing and gift store in Kununurra and the expansion and opening of a fine art gallery was the next step in contributing to Kununurra’s rich and vibrant art culture.

Over the years, Bec and Cally transformed Artopia into a truly unique art experience for the astute art collector and admirer. They curated a selection of exceptional artists, both established and emerging, that showcased the extraordinary talent and diversity of skill in Kununurra, as well as the wider East Kimberley. Bec departed from the business in 2016, and Cally went on to further cement Artopia Gallery as a cornerstone of the community.  Artopia became a host for a variety of functions, including, but not limited to, regular artist exhibitions, corporate functions, artist presentations and yarns, fully catered VIP dining experiences, art therapy sessions and yoga classes. Through her keen understanding of people, community and the power of art, Cally has worked tirelessly to build up Artopia to be more than just a business.  She is completely invested in Kununurra and has designed programs for at-risk youth as well as organising and facilitating massive mural projects across the Kimberley.

Artopia Gallery and the new Artopia Collective gift shop is centrally located in the Cambridge Resort, 47 Victoria Highway, making the gallery accessible to locals and travellers alike. We also have Artopia Framing and Photography, located at 116 Coolibah Drive. Carles Gil, the magician framer, can frame whatever you bring in and transform it into a work of art within art. This shop also features the stunning photography of Landi Bradshaw

    Cally Bugg

    OWNER

    Co-founder Cally Bugg helped to establish Artopia Gallery in 2011 with her twin sister, Bec. With only a vision and determination, she built Artopia up to be one of the Kimberley’s most respected and well-known galleries. In 2021, Artopia Framing and Photography Studio was established, the East Kimberley’s only framing service.

    Lucy Bugg

    SECURITY OFFICER

    At just 8 years old, Lucy has worked her way through the ranks to be promoted to Security Officer of Artopia Gallery. She is excellent at her job but is known to occasionally take bribes in the form of cuddles or cheese.

    Carles Gil

    FRAMER

    Hailing from Barcelona, Carles studied at Llotja Escola d’Art i Disseny, where he achieved his Bachelor of Interior Design in 2015 and Master of Design Management in 2016. He began calling Australia home in 2018 and commenced work as Artopia’s lead framer in 2024.

    Charlotte Spurge

    GALLERY ASSISTANT

    A Kimberley kid at heart, Charlotte grew up in Kununurra before moving to Perth for boarding school, then university and work. She attended Curtin University, where she completed her Bachelor of Commerce in 2020 and Master of Arts (Fine Art) in 2024. Charlotte returned to Kununurra and joined the Artopia team in 2025.
